The π-RIPI project “Creation of the prototype of the data collection platform of the National Registry of Implantable Prostheses (RIPI) (p-RIPI)” has been conceived to capitalize what already designed by ISS, within previous national projects to support the data collection of the Italian Implantable Prostheses Registries (RIPI) Project. It has been partially implemented in an experimental context (TRL3) and will then be put into practice, by realizing a prototype of a complex IT infrastructure, including several registries of specific device categories (i.e. joint prostheses, defibrillators and pacemakers, spinal devices, heart valves and implantable hearing devices), integrated with the real context of some health regional services (moving toward TRL7). The π-RIPI platform will reflect the RIPI architecture structured as an umbrella including several standardized modules and components.
The development of a pilot project on the specific component of the π-RIPI project concerning the identification and characterization of implanted devices, and its implementation as Proof of Concept (POC) was included in Flagship Project 4 (FP4) "Development, Innovation and Certification of Medical and Non-Medical Devices for Health" (WG1, Section 4) and developed in collaboration between ISS (Spoke 2), BVTech (Spoke 1, FP4), Confindustria-DM (FP4) (Figure 1).
Timetable of π-RIPI activities carried on within the Rome Technopole framework
One of the main goals of RIPI project is to provide reliable and high-quality data for monitoring surgery outcomes, performing survival analysis, assessing the safety of devices and procedures, and supporting the traceability of patients. As such, the implementation of an integrated platform could lead to dramatic improvements in the effectiveness of such activities. This would lead to a better quality of life for patients, to better devices being manufactured by manufacturers as well as a more efficient and functional national healthcare system, while also potentially empowering international scientific activities. From a more technological standpoint, the realization of π-RIPI project would also create a viable framework to be followed by realities like RIPI in their digitalization processes, that would be made considerably easier.
This project fits with the aims defined for the Rome Technopole, in particular for Spoke 1, Spoke 2 and FP4.
